You know, that song you can’t stop playing on repeat?! We all have at least one! Mine is THROW YOUR FOOT by The Cure. I hear the music start and suddenly I’m fangirling to give Elvis-girls a run for their money! It’s like I lose all control! I have to dance, and bounce, and sing to the music! I need it at full volume! As though instead of 43 I’m 13!
Then again, I think I was about 12 or 13 when I discovered this song so maybe that’s why? Perhaps it’s nostalgia for times gone by? Harry Beckwith J.D. suggests that the ultimate reason is the surprise in our minds the first time we hear these songs.
Katie Sharp uses Elizabeth Hellmuth Margulis’s words to great effect, “Not only do all known human cultures make music, but they all make music where repetition plays a defining role,” Margulis added. “Especially in unfamiliar styles, repetition helps teach us how to listen. It shows us what the important thematic entities are, and helps us parse the musical surface.”
As for me? I like to think that certain sounds and lyrics resonate with our lives and hearts, and those feeling returns to us everytime we hear our favorite songs.
